Greta Branxton Colts coach Ron Griffiths said his side couldn’t play any worse after their 31-12 loss to Denman in the Group 21 major semi-final on Sunday.
Playing for the right to advance to the grand final, the Colts started sluggishly and went into half-time trailing 14-0.
Two quick tries and a field goal all but sealed the win for Denman early in the second half, before James Ballangarry and Joey Griffiths ran in late consolation tries for the Colts.
“We saved our worst game of the year for the semi-finals, but full credit to Denman, they dominated us through the middle of the park,” Griffiths said.
After claiming the minor premiership, Greta Branxton must now beat Scone on Sunday or see their season ended in straight sets, but Griffiths was confident they’d bounce back.
“If we turn up with the right attitude we’re a completely different side, I don’t forsee the need to make any changes,” he said.
In better news the Colts’ reserve grade side booked their place in the grand final with a 36-24 win over Singleton.
The Colts lost fullback Lachlan Kauter to concussion in the early exchanges and went into half-time trailing 18-12, but finished with four second-half tries to claim the victory.
They will meet the winner of next Sunday’s final between Singleton and Aberdeen on September 1 at Denman.
