But the battle won’t take place on a football field, it will happen in the mind.
St Peter’s has entered four teams in the Hunter Region Tournament of Minds competition at the University of Newcastle on Sunday.
Teams of seven work together on a long-term challenge for six weeks before developing a creative way to communicate their solution to the judging panel in 10 minutes within a three-by-three metre performance area.
Teams also participate in a spontaneous challenge on tournament day which tests creative thinking, team work and co-operation skills.
St Peter’s Tournament of Minds co-ordinator Diane Bond said the day would test students across several academic areas.
“We have four teams of seven so 28 kids going altogether,” Mrs Bond said.
“Each of our four teams will compete in a different area, which includes applied technology, language literature, maths engineering and social sciences.
“It tests their organisational skills as well as team work and other skills development.”
The four teams are made up of students from the school’s gifted and talented program.
“We encouraged some students, but most expressed an interest in the competition,” Mrs Bond said.
“These kids are from our gifted and talented program and this is an internationally recognised competition, so we’re looking forward to seeing how we fare.”
Winners advance to the state finals on September 8 at the University of NSW, followed by the Australasian Pacific Final in October, which is held over three days.
