“If you think of Maitland and what people have done here Milton Morris would be at the top of the list,” historical society president Ruth Trappel said.
The man who is warmly regarded as “Mr Maitland” bestowed his memorabilia upon volunteers at the society rooms yesterday.
Among the many paintings and cartoons were some paper files that included an invitation to the crowning of Charles Windsor as Prince of Wales.
But it was the innocuous painting of a steam engine that has been one of his fondest possessions and reflected his passion as the state’s longest-serving transport minister.
“The 3801 was hanging in the Maitland office,” he said.
Mr Morris was Maitland MP from 1956 to 1980 and established Hunter Valley Training Company where he continues to work.
“The experience of being the member for Maitland for 25 years was just sublime,” he said.
About 250 items spanning those years have been entrusted to Maitland Historical Society.
The volunteers, like Mr Morris, hope the collection will feature in a future Maitland museum.
Meanwhile, the items will remain on display at the society’s club rooms on Cathedral Street, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 9am to 3pm.
