Maitland police are treating the death of a 39-year-old woman in central Maitland as suspicious.
The body of Sonia Williams was found in a Ken Tubman Drive home at 2.30am yesterday.
Officers attached to the NSW Central Hunter local area command stood guard at the home yesterday while a report was prepared for the coroner. Police expect preliminary results sometime this morning.
Police received a call from a concerned woman, believed to be a neighbour, who had not heard from Ms Williams in days but could see her through a window, lying on a lounge.
Officers forced entry to the home and found Ms Williams deceased, lying on her back.
Police told the Mercury last night that a doctor called to the scene noted bruising around the woman’s eyes.
A police spokesman said the death would be treated as suspicious until proven otherwise and that officers would guard the home until that time.
