Plain clothes detectives entered the home of deceased central Maitland woman Sonia Williams at about 12.45pm today.
Uniformed officers remained on guard outside the Ken Tubman Drive house where Williams was found dead at 2.30am Monday.
Shortly after 1pm today police left the crime scene.
The body was found on a lounge by officers attached to the Central Hunter local area command, who forced entry to the front door following a neighbour's concern for her welfare.
First medical observations of the body noted bruising around the eyes which police treated as suspicious.
