A proposal for a golf resort, featuring an 18-hole course designed by legend of the sport Jack Nicklaus, will go before Cessnock councillors early next year.
If approved, the resort would join other international-standard courses in the Hunter including The Vintage, designed by Greg Norman, and Cypress Lakes, home of the Jack Newton Celebrity Classic.
The NSW Department of Planning recommended rezoning the land, on Wine Country Drive, and plans were on public exhibition between November 20 and December 18.
The Golden Bear resort would include 300 permanent residential dwellings, 250 tourist villas, a five star 50-room hotel, retail and food outlets, as well as a function and conference centre.
It would also be home to the Jack Nicklaus Golf Academy of South East Asia.
Nicklaus, who won 18 majors during his career, has designed golf courses around the world, including 25 for Golden Bear resorts, named after his playing nickname.
The Mercury reported in September that plans were also back on the table to establish an 18-hole international-standard golf course on a 423 hectare site at Anvil Creek near Greta.
