He always referred to the Mercury – which celebrated its 170th anniversary on  January 7 – as the paper of record for Maitland, offering readers a window into the comings and goings of our vibrant city.

The Mercury continued that proud tradition again in 2013, covering the city’s personal triumphs and tragedies for the past 12 months. (See our year in review feature on pages 5 and 6).

Taking what we have learnt during the past year – and a leaf from Mr Boyle’s book – Maitland appears primed for big things in 2014.

Maitland Business Chamber president Steve Thomson tells us that local traders experienced their best year since the global financial crisis and the signs for 2014 are looking even better.

Central Maitland will welcome the start of the multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Heritage Mall, which is to be known as The Levee and Stockland Green Hills is expected to put its expansion plans back on the drawing board.

There will also be good news for  motorists, who can expect some relief from peak-hour traffic headaches, when the much anticipated Hunter Expressway opens to traffic early in the new year.

There are also positive signs on the sporting front with the Maitland Pickers announcing some good off-season signings.

Yes, 2014 should be a good year.
