Council to pay tribute to Maitland Olympic, TV stars

Maitland is renowned for its heritage and now the city has been put on the map with the winners of two reality TV shows and two athletes competing at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

East Maitland couple Brad Cranfield and Lara Welham won The Block and then Andy Allen  – also from East Maitland –  was the winner of MasterChef.

Cr Henry Meskauskas will move a motion at Tuesday night’s council meeting to write to Cranfield and Welham and Allen to congratulate them on their win and convey the city’s enthusiasm for their victory.

To top off the city’s highest achievers, Brendan Sexton and Simon Orchard have become the latest Maitland Olympians.

Sexton placed 35th in the triathlon and Orchard became a bronze medallist after he scored in the hockey play-off against Great Britain.

The mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore, said the city was proud of Sexton’s and Orchard’s achievements.

“I congratulate Simon on behalf of the city, I was watching the match,” he said.

“What a goal!

“It felt like the whole of Maitland was behind that shot, and when the commentator said ‘the Maitland boy’ he put us in the goal mouth.

“It was a fitting finish to his first Olympics and no doubt the start of his Olympic career.

“Brendan Sexton also did very well considering the level of competition in the triathlon.”

Cr Blackmore said the city would host a celebration for the athletes when they return to Australia.
