Mr Wright has just finished harvesting his annual millet crop by hand – an exhaustive process that  takes him two full days.

The 72-year-old has been growing millet for more than 40 years at his Wrights Road farm, following five generations of production, and managed another bumper yield in 2014.

“It’s as good a crop as I’ve ever had,” he said.

“Millet is a crop that is very hearty – it does well in dry times and does well when it is wet – and we always seem to get a good crop of millet.”

Once treated and dried, the millet will be used to make Mr Wright’s renowned hand-made millet brooms, which he said will again be in high demand with many customers having already placed their orders.

“It has become a real hobby for me every year, and I like to keep the tradition going,” he said.

“We never seem to have any problem in getting rid of them.”
