Bishop Thompson grew up in Muswellbrook and his Anglican journey began here in the Hunter where he worked with young Anglican people at the University of Newcastle and attended churches in Waratah, Adamstown and Cooks Hill.
More recently he served as Bishop of the Northern Territory.
“I am excited about becoming the Bishop of Newcastle,” Bishop Thompson said.
“My journey began here and I am looking forward to sharing my experience of ministry and community work with the people of this diocese.”
Bishop Thompson was ordained to the priesthood in 1986 and has served in the dioceses of Northern Territory, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra for more than 35 years.
The Anglican Synod elected him in September 2013 after receiving strong support from both the clergy and the laity.
