The residents’ plea comes after a small warehouse was approved for the historic back street.
The proposal is to remove the existing dilapidated shed and build a new shed of similar footprint, to be used as storage of plumbing materials and a tradesman’s vehicle.
“This area is not big enough to support something like this . . . you only have to look at the size of the street,” Mill Street resident Glenda Poynter said.
“No one is saying don’t fix the building, but don’t replace it with something so big.”
The proposal was advertised in November last year. As a result, council received 12 identical submissions objecting to the plans.
“We have grave concerns with the size and height of the structure proposed,” the submissions read.
“We believe it to be an overbearing monstrosity in an area which is predominantly residential. We believe that our living standard will be affected and the price of our properties affected by this large structure.”
But council said issues raised in the submissions were “not considered sufficient to warrant refusal of the application”.
“The objections are primarily concerned with the perceived impact of the proposed building due to height and proportion,” a recent council report stated.
The report also said the proposal would benefit the community in terms of general safety as well improving the aesthetics of the streetscape.
Mrs Poynter said residents had also received news of another development for the street and plans are under way for a preschool nearby.
“Everyone uses this street as a detour from the Melbourne Street lights and things are worse than ever. Someone is going to get killed,” she said.
“This road cannot cope with any more. It’s ridiculous and it affects so many people, we just don’t understand it.”
