That’s the opinion of Maitland Classic Motor Association president Alex Clements who will proudly ­display his 1961 model at the inaugural Morpeth Motorama on Sunday.

Route 66 connects east coast to west and speaks to the heart of carefree 1950s and ’60s motoring in the US. 

“The first generation Corvette is highly recognisable to that era,” Mr Clements said.

“You speak about Route 66 and you see that vehicle.” 

Organisers hope the Morpeth Motorama encourages a pilgrimage to the grounds of Closebourne House.

The day is expected to attract more than 300 vehicles for a show and shine, depending on the weather. 

It will include classic European marques through to Australian muscle cars, motorcycles and war vehicles, as well as a few collectable trucks. 

“It started out as a classic car day but it’s really open to any collectibles and special interest vehicles,” Mr Clements said. 

“There are some very ­interesting cars in some of these collections but it will just depend on what people bring on the day.”

Mr Clements bought the Corvette three years ago in an internet auction and had it imported from Georgia.

“My wife said ‘yes’ so we bought one,” he said.

“There were a few anxious moments buying it online.”

Entry is free to both exhibitors and visitors with hosts Morpeth Town and Lend Lease covering costs.
