The organisation, which formed in response to disastrous floods in the region in 1955, marked the beginning of its 60th year on Thursday with a board meeting at Thornton.
Cr Blackmore, the Hunter Councils chairman, said a records repository was one of the key projects the group had undertaken.
He said the initiative reduced record keeping costs for each council involved.
“We have a large number of clients – they use the service and pay us to keep their records,” he said.
Hunter Councils is a partnership between Maitland, Cessnock, Dungog, Gloucester, Great Lakes, Lake Macquarie, Muswellbrook, Port Stephens, Newcastle, Upper Hunter and Singleton councils.
The group formed as a way to present a united front to state and federal governments.
“Of particular note I would estimate that we represent about 800,000 residents in the Hunter,” Cr Blackmore said.
