The smell of burning coal on the crisp morning air and the sound of the old engines as they build up a head of steam to start their journey have an allure that’s hard to ignore.
The annual Maitland Toyota Steamfest has become a window to our past, our heritage – a window that steam buffs in their thousands flock to our city to look through.
Steam train rides and a variety of steam-powered engines on show at the Steamfest Rally Ground provide a spectacular glimpse of the past for young and old.
The annual festival brings tourists in their thousands each year and pumps much-needed dollars into our economy.
Motels across the city usually hang out their “no vacancies” signs and restaurants experience a spike in trade across the weekend.
Getting this major tourist attraction up and running each year is a big job – a task that usually falls to a small group of people.
That’s why Maitland City Council is calling on community members to put up their hands and become Steamfest volunteers.
Among them is 68-year-old Lindsay Watson, of Tenambit, who is now in his sixth year as a volunteer because he gets satisfaction out of the joy that steam trains bring people.
He is one of about 65 people who have already signed up to volunteer at this year’s festival on April 12 and 13, but more are needed.
If you can help, make the call today and be a part of this wonderful festival that showcases our beautiful city and gives people a look at our past.
If you would like to volunteer call 4931 2877.
