The 1964 Ford Mustang launched in the United States, celebrates its 50th anniversary today and the joys of owning one are not lost on East Maitland couple Sue Wilson and Kevin Richard.
Their red 1967 Mustang came into their lives after a dinner discussion about their bucket lists.
“Kevin told me he had always wanted to own a Mustang,” Ms Wilson said.
“I encouraged him and went with him on his search to find one.
“In 2012 he found what he was looking for in Sydney.”
Ms Wilson loves the style, classic lines and the special feeling she gets while riding in their Ford Mustang.
“I have driven it on occasion, but mostly I am the passenger,” she said. “We love the red Mustang because it is a special colour and catches everyone’s eye.”
The couple enjoys dressing 1950s style and cruising out to Pokolbin’s vineyards, the Upper Hunter and on long country drives.
For Mr Richard, the love affair started in his teens.
“The Mustang always attracted my attention, but I couldn’t afford a car like that back then.
“I thought I would never own one. I am now semi-retired, and after shopping around, I found the car I wanted.
“The Mustang is a unique car with its V8 power and left-hand drive.
“It was the original American muscle car.”
There are 23 Ford Mustangs in the Maitland area.
To celebrate the anniversary, the couple will be part of two events: a dinner for 20 car enthusiasts tonight at their home and the Maitland to Mulbring Mustang Muster on Sunday, May 18 for up to 50 Ford Mustang owners.
