The 14-year-old from Rutherford will compete in the junior clubman category of the National Sprint Kart Championships at Cameron Park this weekend.
The event will be the year 9 Rutherford Technology High School student’s first national titles and it will be the first time the championships have been held in Newcastle since 2001.
V8 Supercar driver Mark Winterbottom won the Formula A Kart Championship at that event and Brunner said he was ready and raring to go for the weekend.
“Dad took me to the kart track to see if I wanted to do it,” he said.
“I love doing it, the speed is probably the best thing.”
Brunner only started racing in the junior clubman category at the start of this year and has competed previously in two state titles.
Competitors will begin practice today with seven sessions scheduled.
Qualifying and heats will begin on Friday with two more heats on Saturday before the finals on Sunday.
Sam Tooth and Hayden Jackson will also represent Maitland at the national titles.
Tooth will compete in the clubman heavy category while 16-year-old Jackson has entered in the X30 heavy class.
