The Green Army program gives people, aged between 17 and 24, a chance to receive training and experience in environmental and heritage conservation fields and explore possible careers through projects that benefit the community.
Paterson MP Bob Baldwin (pictured) said the Green Army project sought councils and community groups that had ideas for new environmental initiatives in the region.
“The Green Army projects teach many young people about team work, local ownership and about the value of belonging to something greater than themselves,” he said.
Project guidelines for Green Army projects are available online and applications are open until May 9.
Activities could involve restoring and protecting habitat, weeding, planting, cleaning creeks and rivers and conserving cultural heritage places. Under the program, participants will be paid an allowance and undertake accredited training.
“We are now looking for projects that will make a real difference to the environment and local communities,” Mr Baldwin said.
He said the Green Army would have about 15,000 young people on board by 2018, which would make it the largest environmental support team in Australia.
Groups in Paterson will be able to bid to host a Green Army team.
To be eligible for the first round of the program, projects must be ready to begin between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2015.
