The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate, took their young son George to Taronga Zoo in Sydney yesterday as part of their latest tour of Australia.
Ms Parker welcomed them to the zoo and spoke with the royal couple about conservation and the zoo’s projects, as part of her role as NSW Environment Minister.
She spoke to them about the zoo’s bilby breeding program and the plan to build up the animal’s population in NSW.
“We went into the nocturnal house and George got all excited,” Ms Parker said. “I think he [George] is teething because he had some dribble coming out of his mouth but he was very well behaved.”
Ms Parker said she was impressed with how down-to-earth the Duke and Duchess seemed when they spoke with her.
“They were so friendly and interested in the conservation work we are doing here at the zoo at the moment.
“The Duke of Cambridge has quite a strong interest in conservation.”
It wasn’t the first time Ms Parker had a brush with royalty, having met Duchess of Cornwall Camilla when she last toured Australia with her husband Prince Charles in 2012.
Ms Parker said William, Kate and George stayed for the zoo’s afternoon bird show, set to a backdrop of Sydney harbour.
