Within the next couple of months Harry Thomson and two of his mates will buy a car for less than $1000 to drive across 18 countries, five mountain ranges, three deserts and an infinite number of potholes.

All to raise money for young people with cancer.
“We have a $1000 budget and we have to buy a car that’s over 10 years old and under one litre, so basically a piece of junk, and our mechanical knowledge is next to nothing,” Mr Thomson, 23, said.
“It will all be about negotiating and trying to cross borders.”
The young Black Hill man has joined forces with Wagga Wagga men Damien Le Broque and Andrew Robertson, both 24, to take on the London to Mongolia challenge.
The trio wants to raise $10,000 from the adventure they’ve named The Fine Line.
“Because it’s such a fine line between being happy and healthy and then having cancer,” Mr Thomson said.
Cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death among Australia’s teenagers and more than 100 young people are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 30.
The Sony Foundation – under the initiative YouCan – is raising money for centres designed to support and treat young people with cancer.
“We need to raise more money for young people with cancer because they are dealing with a whole other level of emotions compared to adults,” Mr Thomson said.
The landscape architect has quit his job and will leave London on July 19 for the adventure of a lifetime.
“I haven’t really travelled before, so I was always going to take some time off this year to that,” Mr Thomson said.
“But I didn’t really want to take the typical Euro trip and spend all my money on alcohol, so I thought I’d go and get lost in Kazakhstan and do something completely out of the blue.”
