Maitland RSL sub-branch vice-president Fred Goode said the weather had dampened numbers, which were down on last year's turnout of 3000 people.
"There were a few little spots of rain, but people just put their umbrellas up and we made it through the service," Mr Goode said.
"There were lots of children; a lot of parents brought their kids.
"And there were a lot of young ex-servicemen and women in the crowd, which we haven't noticed before, but which was great to see."
Mr Goode noticed one woman, who he believed was an Iraq or Afghanistan veteran, wearing her medals to the service.
Maitland's morning march may be cancelled due to bad whether.
A decision is likely to be made later this morning.
More details as they come.
