Sophie’s choice ... bears

Honey bears, grizzly bears – more than 90 species to be exact, and one of the most feared animals in the world.

This was a snippet of Sophie Nella’s speech at the Hunter Central Coast Public Speaking Zone finals held at Metford Public School yesterday.

Sophie, a student at Nulkaba Public School, was the first contestant in the stage three competition and was animated as she shared her facts about bears including their heights, weight and ability to swim.

Contestants were required to speak for three minutes about a topic of their choice and were permitted to use palm cards.

“Public speaking helps students develop skills for life and it prepares them for taking on leadership roles at school,” Metford Public School teacher Brooke Owen said.  “The standard was exceptional.”

Students who qualified for the next round will compete on Thursday, September 13, at Heaton Public School.

See Class Act on Tuesday for pictures of the heat 2 zone final at Tenambit Public School on Tuesday.
