Thirty-nine lamp posts were scheduled for removal as part of The Levee project mall upgrades and councillors allocated them to organisations and private residents in the community last night.
Cr Arch Humphrey said a mail sorting error meant that the rugby club’s application for 10 heritage-style lamp posts for its car park was overlooked, because the application was addressed: “To whom it may concern.”
But strategic projects executive manager Wayne Cone said an extra three lights had recently been earmarked for removal.
Councillors allocated the three extra lights and shade structure to the club.
Mr Cone said more lights could become available to organisations when future CBD refurbishment took place.
Council bought the lamp posts, which have no heritage value, in 1988.
Staff estimated the lamps would cost $1400 each to refurbish to make them suitable for the new mall.
The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle will get 16 lamps for $100 each, while Maitland Rotary clubs will pay nothing for the 10 street lights they have been allocated.
The remaining posts will be split between six other organisations and residents on the condition that they are not placed in a public park or road reserve.
