A 79-year-old Cessnock woman has died after the car she had been driving ran over her about 10.15am today.
Central Hunter duty officer Chief Inspector Greg Lindsell said the woman and her 74-year-old sister, also from Cessnock, were leaving an Aberdare Road tennis club when the incident occurred.
Chief Inspector Lindsell said the 79-year-old tried to perform a reversing U-turn in the club’s driveway when the car mounted a gutter and went onto an unused bowling green.
As the driver got out of the car to see what had happened, she appeared to step on the car’s accelerator, he said.
The car jolted backwards and dragged the woman underneath.
Her sister, who was in the passenger seat at the time, was knocked over when the car lurched in the opposite direction as she tried to get out to help the 79-year-old.
Chief Inspector Lindsell said the sisters were taken to Cessnock Hospital where the 79-year-old was pronounced dead.
The 74-year-old suffered concussion but was otherwise uninjured, Chief Inspector Lindsell said.
