Known as Coalfields Steam 2014, the occasions will see the gates of the museum in Leggetts Drive open at 10am both days, with the first train ride starting at 10.30am.
“Marjorie has a top speed of up to 50km/h and will provide a thrilling train ride,” tour officer Wendy Black said. “It’s going to be a big day for all of us and our X200 diesel, built in 1968, will be joining Marjorie to give train rides throughout these two days.
“There will be a total of around 40 trips run during each day, from the museum to Pelaw Main, each trip taking about 40 minutes.
“People will be able to enjoy their trips in stainless steel carriages.
“There are very few active locomotives around now and this will be an ideal excursion for train enthusiasts and everyone who wants to enjoy a good day out.”
One of the other highlights will be an ex-shunting engine and there will be display runs by coal hoppers that used to travel in the Newcastle coalfields and around Cessnock.
Another locomotive called Alison will be on static display.
“We will also be conducting tours of the mining museum so people can see how things used to be around here,” Ms Black said.
“There will be a mine shaft to be viewed and visitors will learn how a power station here provided power for this whole area until 1976.
Prices are $16 for adults, $11 concessions, $7.50 for children aged five to 15 and children under five are free. Families of disabled people and their carers will also have free admission.
