Fifty-five students in years seven to 12 will tread the boards this week performing the 1960 Broadway musical inspired by the phenomenon surrounding Elvis Presley’s drafting into the army.
Loretta Hornery, head teacher of Creative Performance Arts, said students have embraced the all-ages musical.
“It’s a really nice musical, it’s got a great feel about it; nice singable tunes and catchy songs,” Ms Hornery said.
Year 10 student Liam Faustini plays the lead role of Conrad Birdie, a 1950s rock and roll star shipped off to war.
“I’m a bit nervous,” the multi-talented teen, who plays guitar, bass, drums and sings, said.
His leading lady Ashlee Brown plays Kim MacAfee, a teenage girl who is chosen to receive one last kiss from Conrad Birdie.
“It’s a good old-style comedy with some good humour in it,” Ashlee, who wants to pursue a career in creative arts when she finishes year 12 later this year, said.
The cast has the support of 15 backstage crew and a live band made up of 12 students and Rutherford musicians.
The show will be held tonight and tomorrow night.
Tickets are available at the school.
