Larry Wilson has urged people who were unhappy with the speed of their internet service, or who are unable to get an ADSL connection to their business or home, to contact him.
He wants to present a united front to telecommunication companies to have infrastructure upgraded across the region.
Mr Wilson said he worked for the Australian Navy developing the first campus-wide local area network at a base in Sydney and also worked on the development of satellite phone infrastructure for Vodafone.
He decided to form an action group after reading recent Mercury stories about residents at Thornton, Largs and Morpeth who had become victims of lagging infrastructure.
“I want to get a pool of people together and gather data and information so the buck falls back on telecommunication companies to add more ports to exchanges at places like Rutherford, Telarah and Largs,” Mr Wilson said.
“In East Maitland, the service is great, but everywhere else the infrastructure is lacking.
“The idea is to get enough ports in an area to reflect the growth of that area.”
Mr Wilson said Australia was akin to a third world nation in broadband terms when compared with the likes of South Korea and Japan, which have had 4G and fibre optic internet for the past decade.
“There are farmers out there who are having to use satellite internet that is only a little faster than dial-up,” he said. “The satellites are congested, so the service is slow.
“ADSL is cheaper and better value.”
