Ms Leslie made the presentation at The Glenn drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in Rothbury.
“The Mind Your Mates presentation was originally designed for the mining industry and its major purpose is to help people to recognise and help those who could be a risk of harming themselves,” Ms Leslie said.
“This would include Lifeline face-to-face counselling and it has now been conducted in Maitland, Singleton and Muswellbrook.
“This particular program presented at Rothbury was structured by Maitland Suicide Prevention Network and it worked really well,” Ms Leslie said.
“It was the first time the Mind Your Mates presentation has been made at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, which is just the place to have them.
“There could undoubtedly be other presentations at rehabilitation centres following this one, because the program fits very well into places where people are in a confined environment.
“People in these centres are particularly good at sharing their own personal experiences with others.”
The presentation lasted about 30 minutes and concluded with the handing out of cards containing telephone numbers of people able to help.
Ms Leslie said it included a slide presentation followed by discussion among clients that was conducted with enthusiasm.
