Ninety students from Holy Spirit Infant School, Abermain, will plant natives, donated by Cessnock Council, in their playground as part of Planet Ark’s Schools Tree Day.
“[Tree planting encourages] them to be proactive helping with environmental matters,” year 2 teacher, Rochelle Wilson said.
In Tarro, 30 children will get their hands dirty to inspire Australia’s next generation to get into nature and help preserve the environment.
Since it began, National Tree Day - along with Schools Tree Day – has been responsible for helping various communities plant more than 20 million trees across the country.
The initiative, supported by Toyota, aims to create a society where people have contact with nature, understand its value and participate in its care.
“Each year more than 200,000 people take part in National Tree Day at approximately 3000 planting sites, which is testament to the willingness of Australian communities to do what they can to support the environment,” Planet Ark spokeswoman Debbie Agnew said.
National Tree Day is on Sunday and Schools Tree Day on Friday, July 25.
