Roads and Maritime Services is widening the New England Highway in each direction between Racecourse and Regiment roads to allow two lanes each way.
The work is part of a $3.5 million project designed to remove a major pinch point for highway motorists.
Drainage will be upgraded and traffic lanes will be realigned as part of the project, which will also involve removal of the concrete median islands, laying new asphalt and marking new lines on the road.
The night work will take place from Sunday to Thursday from 7pm to 4.30am and was expected to take three weeks to complete.
RMS will try to minimise the impact of light and noise associated with the work and planned to complete its noisiest activities before 11pm each day.
A temporary 40km/h speed limit will be in place during work and traffic controllers and signs will help direct motorists through the affected area to ensure the safety of workers and road users.
Motorists are asked to plan their journey and allow extra travel time.
