The final was a battle of Maitland’s western suburbs in which St Paul’s overcame Rutherford Public School 24-4.
“It was a really good game and they worked well as a team,” St Paul’s teacher Bernadette Burgess said.
“We have a few good leaders the team responds to.”
Sean Walker scored three tries while Jacob Davis, Matthew Guy and Ethan Butterfield each nabbed one.
Man of the match was awarded to Ethan Butterfield.
“Rutherford Public we’re in it for the first half but we ran away with it in the second half,” Mrs Burgess said.
Both teams made an undefeated run through the preliminaries and semi- finals.
“St Paul’s were the eventual winners but both teams must be commended on their sportsmanship and sporting prowess displayed on the day,” Rutherford Public teacher and coach Wade Cochrane said.
While St Paul’s was awarded the shield Rutherford Public players received a certificate from Pickers members.
“This caps off a great year for Rutherford Public School’s rugby league program with two players being selected into the zone team and one into the regional side,” Mr Cochrane said.
“Through their dedication and training they also made the finals of the Knights Knockout and placed in the top four sides in their region (out of 32 teams) in PSSA.
“Congratulations to the boys on a stellar year and I feel privileged to have witnessed them mature as rugby league players and as young men.”
The Picker’s Cup win has again qualified St Paul’s in the Jarrod Mullen Cup.
The boys were runners-up last year and hope to go one step further this time around.
St Paul’s carried its good form into the All Schools State Knockout in Sydney on Monday where they were defeated in the quarter-finals against eventual finalists Guymea from the Sydney’s Sutherland shire.
