The state government’s second rollout of flashing lights began in Sydney this week, with Maitland scheduled to have lights installed at all schools without the warning devices in November.
Maitland MP Robyn Parker said it was part of the government’s commitment to have flashing warning lights installed in all schools’ speed zones in NSW by the end of 2015.
“This is exciting for our school communities as flashing lights slow drivers down in school zones and make the roads safer for our children,” she said.
“First we completed the flashing lights rollout for schools on higher risk roads in NSW, including several in Maitland.
“The lights will continue to include back-to-base technology which ensures they operate consistently and any faults can be addressed quickly.
“These lights will be retro-fitted to existing school zone signs at the main entry point for each school and include flashing lanterns that we know are effective at slowing drivers down.
“In four-and-a-half years we will have covered all the school zones in NSW and delivered on an important commitment to parents and families.”
