This club has 140 players and has been acclaimed for its ability to recruit and welcome newcomers.
Its efforts were so esteemed by the Australian Bridge Federation that it was awarded a marketing grant of $10,000 last year.
“The best bridge players in the world today tend to be youngsters and we particlarly want young people to take up the game,” the club’s bridge teacher Jenny Coyle said yesterday.
“Our club would love to have more younger members, so in the near future we will be approaching high schools around Maitland to see how they feel about having bridge lessons in schools,” Ms Coyle said.
“All schools will be considered for bridge lessons and we will be talking to teachers, parents and students to seek their involvement.
“If we get schools on board with such a program, it would be really great for our club, for the students and I believe for our community.
“But it will be up to schools, staff and students to want this.”
Ms Coyle said she believed this would be the first time in Maitland that a program teaching bridge in schools could be launched.
“Bridge is now played at our club six days a week, where we cater for both new and experienced players,” Ms Coyle said.
The next series of beginner
lessons will be held in October or November this year and anyone interested should phone Ms Coyle on 0419 774 807.
