Police allege a man entered a travel shop on Cooper Street about 1.30pm on Monday last week armed with a hand gun.
Police were told the man threatened a female employee and demanded cash.
The woman handed over money before the man allegedly assaulted her and fled the scene.
Central Hunter officers were called and established a crime scene.
The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 30s, about 183cm tall with a medium build and short dark hair.
The man also had colourful tattoos down both arms.
He was last seen wearing a grey t-shirt and black thongs.
