Jake Michael Cooper, of Carr Street, pleaded guilty in Maitland Local Court to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possessing a prohibited weapon and contravening an AVO after an incident on May 4 this year.
About 10.15pm, Cooper had an altercation with the man at the Carr Street residence.
Police alleged he was told to leave by his mother but refused.
When the 19-year-old was then asked to leave by the man he picked up the homemade gas gun.
Central Hunter police went to the house and seized the gas gun and a spear.
According to police documents, the gas gun had an electronic trigger and was capable of shooting flames when fired.
In sentencing, magistrate Les Mabbutt described Cooper’s juvenile record as shocking.
“I have taken into account your age but I have no option but to impose a custodial sentence,” he said.
Cooper was sentenced to three months jail for possession a prohibited weapon and seven months each for the assault and contravening an AVO.
The sentence was backdated to his arrest in May.
Cooper will be eligible for release next month.
