I would like to congratulate and thank the Mercury for its support in requesting the Premier to delay cutting the rail to Newcastle at least until after the election as those who have been exposed as engaging in corrupt conduct were also pushing hard for the rail line to go.

Robyn Parker’s loyalty to her colleagues is laudable – “MP rail verdict clean” – (MM August 20) but after the revelations over the past three weeks involving politicians and developers we could be forgiven for being sceptical.
Added to this is the fact that those who use the train most, that is, people from Maitland, Lake Macquarie, Dungog and the Upper Hunter, were not consulted about its truncation, the matter needs to go to an election for the people to decide.
It is just unbelievable that the government can claim that the electorate is happy with the truncation when all polls have shown that this is not the case.
It is further astounding that the cutting of the rail is to go ahead just when the University of Newcastle is moving a campus into the city centre.
Traffic and parking chaos will loom large in Newcastle’s future if sanity is not restored and the heavy rail line into Newcastle kept.
