At 11am, schools and churches across the city will ring their bells in honour of those men and women who have served Australia during the past centenary.
And as Australia’s oldest continually operating public school, Largs is proud to take part in the communal ceremony.
“It’s great that a significant part of our historical school [the 175-year-old school bell] has motivated the students to learn about and participate in such an important part of Australian history,” principal Sharon Palmer said.
Before the bell ringing, two red cedar trees will be planted at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery.
The colour red symbolises courage and bravery and will be a lasting reminder of the qualities that forged the spirit of the Anzac and Australia’s identity of courage, mateship, sacrifice, generosity, freedom and a fair go for all.
“Maitland City Council has had an enthusiastic response from churches and schools in the area and bells from east to west will ring out and give a moment’s pause to reflect on the sacrifices that were made by individuals and communities during WWI,” a council spokesperson said.
