Year 11 visual art students at All Saints College, St Mary’s Campus, Maitland held the exhibition on Tuesday with 28 totem sculptures on display.
The theme for the exhibition was personal experience and students were required to use both man-made and natural materials to make their totems.
Art teacher Natalie Sherring said the sculpture unit of the course had given the students an opportunity to experience putting on an exhibition.
“It’s their first chance to show their art to a public audience,” she said.
“Hopefully it will also help them overcome shyness and build some confidence and give their art some exposure.”
The students created three kinds of totems - assemblage, free-standing and hanging totems.
Mrs Sherring said totems were traditionally used to represent a clan or a group of people.
Student Elizabeth Hurley said her work - Small Things Recoil Into Silence - showed a contrast between natural and industrial elements.
“It only took me one lesson to do, it was really easy, but I was really happy with how it turned out,” she said.
