Her family spoke this weekend about the great-grandmother who was devoted to the army – and especially to Maitland RSL sub-branch.
A funeral for Mrs Murray, 92, was held in Morpeth on Friday, with her three sons, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and scores of friends in attendance.
And a special guard of honour from Maitland RSL paid tribute to her.
“Mum worked in Military Intelligence while stationed at Wagga Wagga from early 1943 to 1946, and she was also based at Kapooka,” her son Peter said.
“Mum typed the orders out: she knew what the commanders were going to do on the battlefield before they did, but she kept her mouth shut,” he said. “She was dedicated to her country and to all service personnel and she never talked about what she did.”
Mrs Murray was a life member of Maitland RSL where she also served as treasurer for many years.
She was also closely involved with Legacy and helped with fund-raising.
Mrs Murray was a member of Probus for several years and of the Country Women’s Association.
