And in the Hunter, spring is expected bring near average rainfall and some warm days ranging to hotter than usual as the season develops, according to Weatherwatch meteorologist Don White.
“This September, October and November we can expect some near average rainfall,” Mr White said yesterday.
“If anything, it could be slightly down. But temperatures will be warmer than normal, especially in the second half of spring.
“The last 28 springs have all been above average in temperature and that would not have happened if it were not for climate change,” Mr White said.
“So with some quite warm days in the second half of spring, we can expect early summer to be quite hot.
“From mid-October through November and December we are expecting temperatures to be well above average – perhaps by two to five degrees warmer. Last year had those same temperatures too.”
Mr White said Australia and South Africa were the only two countries in the southern hemisphere that took September 1 as the time to change from winter to spring, because British soldiers in both colonies found that date easy to remember to change into lighter uniforms.
