Ratepayers will receive a $29.45 credit on their next rates notice if they have already paid the most recent Maitland City Council waste levy.
The most recent rates notices charged residents for the higher cost of waste management council faced because of the carbon tax.
The fee was removed yesterday, more than a month after the Senate axed the controversial tax.
Council was forced to put the fee change on public exhibition for 28 days when the government repealed the tax, in line with the Local Government Act.
The Act requires councils to put all fee changes on public exhibition for almost a month before they can be introduced.
The cost of dumping waste at Mount Vincent fell by $38.50 per tonne on Monday, as council removed the carbon tax charge.
Cr Philip Penfold (pictured) said he commonly heard complaints from residents that dumping at council’s Mount Vincent Waste Management Facility was too expensive.
But he said council did not profit from domestic waste and the fees were necessary to cover costs.
“I don’t think people realise that even the free waste services are not free for us [council],” he said.
“We’ve still got to pay the taxes.”
