But now the promoters of the annual concert series are launching Rolling Green.
It's a night out for the kids.
Ohio blues duo The Black Keys, who have been filling stadiums around the world since the breakthrough success of their seventh record El Camino in 2011, will headline the first instalment of the new youth-focused event.
They will be joined by perennial Aussie favourites Spiderbait, British swamp-rock trio Band of Skulls and rising Australian rock group Bad//Dreems.
"A Day on the Green has found its place but there is no reason younger audiences should not see bands they want to see in the beautiful environments that have made A Day on the Green such an established event for an older crowd," Roundhouse Entertainment promoter Michael Newton said.
"The Black Keys is the perfect band to launch Rolling Green."
The Black Keys are touring the world off the back of this year's new record Turn Blue, and will also headline this year's Bluesfest at Byron Bay.
The duo of singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, are no strangers to the Hunter and have played increasingly larger venues with every visit.
They famously played The Cambridge Hotel in March 2005 before visiting Maitland to play Groovin The Moo in 2007.
The pair returned to play Newcastle Panthers in 2009 and then packed out Newcastle Entertainment Centre on October 21, 2012.
Rolling Green is at Bimbadgen Estate on Saturday, April 11, 2015.
Tickets are on sale Thursday, September 11 September at 9am from Ticketmaster.com.au.
