The national suicide prevention charity has challenged all Australians to engage in life-changing conversations with friends, family or co-workers who might be doing it tough on R U OK? Day.
Australian Health Minister Peter Dutton said suicide affects too many Australians with about seven people taking their own life each day, or more than 2400 each year.
“We all need to find the time and the courage to support those who need us most,” he said.
“Regular and meaningful conversations are good for us all. Research tell us that strong relationships and a sense of belonging can help protect people from suicide.”
Actor and R U OK? ambassador Simon Baker said there was a need for conversations in communities.
“We have horrible droughts in this country, bushfires and other incidents where Australians band together,” he said.
“We have proven that we have the strength and the power to stand together as a community.
