The veteran Rams had advanced to the final with a 4-0 rout of Tigers the previous weekend, but found themselves chasing the game after Wests went 2-0 up in the first half.
In an even contest Maitland had chances, but couldn’t find the net until midway through the second half when Gary Urquhart made it 2-1.
They were unable to find the equaliser, however, bringing to an end a golden era, which had brought four straight sixth-grade premierships to the Rams.
The loss leaves Maitland’s third grade outfit to fly the flag in Saturday’s grand final at Newcastle International Hockey Centre.
