Porter’s father Bob won the major prize three years ago, but her winning performance this year, which earned her $1000, was all her own work.
“I studied the ins and outs each week and managed to make a good start,” she said.
“I led for quite a while and towards the end I stuck with the favourites.
“After leading for so long I felt like I’ve just got to hold on.
“But even then with the State of Origin rounds to be counted I couldn’t be certain.”
The top three place-getters in this competition were all women, with Porter holding out by four points from Cherie Davis, of East Maitland, and Sharon Williams, of Bolwarra.
