Launched on Google Play last week, the HSC Test Yourself app, uses multiple choice questions from previous HSC exams so students can test their knowledge on their phone.
Rutherford High School science head Steven Edwards said while the app was useful it could be more so if short-answer questions were included.
"There are other apps probably better with multiple choice and short answers," Mr Edwards said.
"[The app is] useful. My students wouldn't use it normally, I see the advantage for students commuting. They could pull out their phone and do a bit of study on the train."
The app was developed by former Greystanes High School student Shubham Shah.
"It's a great little tool and it's essentially just multiple choice questions," Mr Edwards said.
"There are only 20 multiple choice question in the exam, so it's not a great portion."
Year 12 chemistry student Melanie Ware said the app was helpful but there were free alternatives available.
"I know you can get similar thing that are multiple choice for free," Melanie said.
Board of Studies president Tom Alegounarias said the app was affordable.
"The cost to download a course is affordable and everyone has the chance to try some questions before they buy the full set," Mr Alegounarias said.
"The HSC Test Yourself app will help teachers with revision lessons and will also help parents who want to learn more about the types of questions contained in the HSC exams."
