“In spring we often see an increase in people suffering from asthma and allergic rhinitis, often known as hay fever, as a result of the increase of pollen in the air and changes in humidity,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Norm Spalding said. 

“We find that people don’t realise they are having a severe attack until their symptoms are quite serious.” 

WeatherZone has forecast high pollen levels on Sunday.

Some sufferers of pollen allergies will experience symptoms on high pollen level days, but these are unlikely to be severe. 

Temperatures are likely to be warm on these days, but there could be a limiting factor such as rain or sea breezes.

Asthma is a dangerous condition which results in a chronic inflammation of the airways. 

This inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing, particularly at night or in the early morning. 

An asthma attack can prove fatal in minutes. 

“It is always important, regardless of how you are feeling when you first get up in the morning, to carry your medication with you at all times,” Inspector Spalding said. 

“Our advice is that if your suffering a severe asthma attack and your medication is not responding as it normally would than call triple-0 and ask for an ambulance sooner rather than later.”
