State government figures reveal that 87 first home owners grants were approved in Rutherford and Aberglasslyn this past financial year worth $15,000 each.
This outstripped Edgeworth as the next most popular suburb with 72 grants.
“We’ve assisted more than 500 first homebuyers in the Hunter in the past year and paid out more than $12 million in grants and concessions, with suburbs like Edgeworth, Rutherford, Wallsend and Gillieston Heights enjoying the highest take up rates in the region,” state Treasurer Andrew Constance said.
Gillieston Heights was the third most popular suburb in the Hunter where 49 first home builders took up the grant, worth $735,000.
Thornton also ranked highly with 33 grants, while East Maitland was not far behind with 21.
When added up, the government grant was worth more than $2.8 million to those residents.
Those Maitland people also saved $1.3 million because the government does not charge stamp duty on new homes.
“The NSW government is getting on with the job of freeing up land supply while ensuring the financial support is in place for young families entering the market,” Mr Constance said.
The first home owners grant is a national scheme funded by the states and territories.
