The biology of each species could not be further apart, but in the hands of a master chef they are joined together in succulent matrimony.
Beef and Reef is a dish that spans land and ocean.
And it was the go-to meal for both myself and my guest, Oakhampton identity Mitch Power, when we were invited to the humble bistro of Maitland Park Bowling Club.
Sometimes known by the equally catchy rhyme surf and turf, Beef and Reef is creamy prawns atop a prime steak.
The bistro quickly served up two superb cuts of sirloin that were cooked exactly as ordered.
Mine was a perfect medium rare and Power’s, much like his sense of humour, was served blue.
The Reef and Beef is drizzled with a light cream sauce, with broad steak chips and a choice of vegies or salad for $26.50.
It was delicious.
With lawn bowls under lights on the green outside our window and diners square dancing to easy-listening tunes from the guitarist in the corner, Maitland Park Bowling Club’s bistro had a relaxed family-friendly atmosphere.
There are menu items that will suit all tastes, from breads to burgers, fish and chips, pastas and schnitzels.
Vegetarian options include the pumpkin and pine nut salad, vegetarian lasagne and fettucine Napolitano.
There are also options for gluten-free eaters, plus a children’s menu and a colourful array of desserts behind a glass case.
The bistro is run by Steve and Jo Kelly, who ensure two things when you dine at the bowling club: quality tucker and service with a smile.
