The 10 finalists were unveiled while Paul Bevan broadcast live interviews with the artists and gallery organisers for 1233 ABC.
Maitland born-and-raised Laura Wickham (now a resident of Muswellbrook) took home the grand prize - an all-expenses-paid trip to Canberra's National Portrait Gallery and an opportunity to enter her piece in the 2015 National Portrait Prize.
Gallery deputy director and art prize judge Brigette Uren noted that this year's entrants exhibited "a particularly Hunter Valley feel" while Mr Bevan said "the general quality of 2014's portraits seems to be a marked increase over previous years."
