Two-time defending champion Shelly Shin blew the rest of the field away on day one of the Jack Newton International Junior Classic, breaking her own course record in the process.

Shin, from Concord Golf Club in Sydney, fired nine birdies on her way to a six-under 66 in steamy conditions yesterday to lead the girls’ championship by three shots.
The score is the lowest ladies total in the history of Maitland Golf Club, bettering the mark Shin set last year.
In the boys’ event, Charlestown’s Blake Windred shot a six-under 65 to lead by two strokes from Kevin Yuan and Queenslander Chris Park.
Windred, who represents Monash Country Club, shot seven birdies to find himself on top of the early leaderboard.
Maitland’s Hayden Gulliver looked to be in contention at one-under through nine holes but faded on his back nine to card a six-over 77 to be the best of the local contingent.
Maitland’s Will Fraser and Trent Park had 83 and 86 respectively.
In the sub-junior event at Kurri Kurri Golf Club, Maitland’s Clayton Small is one shot back in the boys’ championship after the opening round.
Small shot a two-over 74, including a birdie on 17, to sit one behind Western Australian Cooper Geddes and Bradley Doherty.
Branxton’s Corey Lamb and Kurri Kurri’s Nick Neild shot 81s, while Kurri Kurri pair Camran Walton and Lachlan Vassella had 87 and 88 respectively.
The 72-hole event continues today and will finish on Friday.
